If you’re willing to put a little effort into this bike, you’ll have a reliable, durable ride that hasn’t cost you a fortune. The Vilano Performance Shimano Hybrid Flat Bar Commuter Road Bike has everything you’re looking for in an entry-level bike. It’s suitable for beginners and anyone who uses their bike for commuting and fitness.
The frame is made of double-butted aluminum while other parts, like the stem, handlebars and seat post are made from high quality alloys. This keeps the weight of the bike down to a minimum, making it agile and easy to handle. The Shimano front and rear derailleurs which have been fitted, are a fair quality and work reasonably well to provide a smooth gear change. However, you’ll probably find that they need to be adjusted out of the box. With 21 speeds, it handles hills well and is fast enough to slice through traffic.
Stopping the bike is easy, thanks to the quality, silent braking system. The linear pull v-brakes do an excellent job of bringing the bike to a quick stop without you having to apply much pressure. This is an important feature to consider if you’ll be riding in the rush hour. Vilano have included a nice set of metal pedals with the bike. They’re easy to fit, look good and have a firm bite that grips well.
Most road bikes are notoriously uncomfortable to ride on for any length of time. But the Ergo Comfort Seat on this model offers a surprising level of comfort. The flat handlebar also creates a forward-leaning posture that helps to ease the strain on your back.
Once it’s tuned up, the bike delivers a smooth, easy ride. However, because it needs extra attention we can only give it three stars.
